Well, first of all I have to say that I love everything Renée has done in the past. Her writing is just so captivating and beautiful, I can’t stay away from her books. If you haven’t read anything about this book, here’s the blurb.

“My guardian angel is a drunk.”

Evelyn Casey’s life is at a standstill. She’s in her mid-twenties, struggling with the dating scene in San Francisco. Nothing seems to be working out, and she’s starting to think that she’ll live out her days in her crummy apartment with her overbearing roommate, Brooklyn. It’s absurd, but sometimes Evey longs for a guardian angel to show up and save the day.

And then he does. Seriously. His name is Lucian and he’s a guardian angel, been on the job for two thousand years. His sudden presence in her life is both good—he’s brilliant, witty, and warm—and bad—he’s brilliant, witty, warm, and hot as —-. But as perfect as Lucian seems, he’s got problems of his own. He’s taken up drinking and he’s brazenly inserted himself into Evey’s life, going against the greatest cosmic law ever created.

For Evey, the rules are simple: You are not allowed to hook up with your guardian angel. But sometimes fulfilling your destiny requires a leap of faith, a confrontation with God.

Yes, God as in God.

Ok so, I’ve declared my love for Renée’s work before. If you’ve read any of my reviews about her books, you’ll notice how much I adore them. They’re all so full of everything I’m looking in a story, I truly can’t stay away, they call to me <3. When I first read the blurb of LUCIAN DIVINE I couldn’t imagine how hard it would be to wait for it to be available. I craved it. So, you can imagine my happiness when I found out I’d been approved by Netgalley to read it. I started it right away and I didn’t stop until I finished it.

Let me start my review by saying that I loved Lucian. His character was sarcastic and gorgeous and so damn lovable. I loved him from the start. He was so damn broken inside, trying his best to do what was right, in his own messed up way, but it’s hard when your heart and mind are at war according to what it is that’s right. He did what he felt he needed to do, hoping it would turn out ok for him and Evelyn. I laughed at his comments and my heart broke when he was hurting.

Then there’s Evelyn. I liked her. I think she was a bit too “okay” about the whole angel thing, when I think most would be in shock for several days (at least). She jumped into this whole new life without any reservations, no questions and no doubts about anything. But overall, Evey was a really nice girl who just wanted to be loved and love back. She just wanted to be herself and be happy. The only thing about her that I found annoying was her best friend, if you could call that a friend.

The story itself sounded so, so, so good when I first read about it. A drunk angel, a confrontation with God, Lucian’s inner war… it was the perfect recipe for perfection. I think Renee took a great risk while writing this book. Her previous books are completely different from this one. Yes, they all have a swoon-worthy boyfriend, a wonderful girl and an incredible love story, but in this one, we have the angel, paranormal, whatever-factor. I loved that she venture into this new side of her writing and I’m sure it’s only the beginning of a thousand new possibilities for her future work. My issue with it is not the plot, but some holes I found in the story that I just couldn’t shake off. I’m not going to get in too deep about them, because I don’t want to ruin anything for any potential reader, but yes, they were there and sadly, they distracted me too much.

I think this story has all the potential of the world. The characters are great and the love story had so many epic moments <3 Renée is a genius when it comes to her books. I admire her work and her passion about her stories, you can actually feel it while reading her books.

If you guys are in the mood for a fast read and wonderful love story, maybe you should check this one out. And if you haven’t read anything by Renée, you have no idea of what you’ve been missing and you DEFINITELY need to check those out, for some heartache, some deep and beautiful love, and some of the happiest moments you’ll find in a book.
